what is the vitamin D referance range in the blood?
My first test was 3 months ago and they said it was a 19, after taking vitamin D during that time it has gone up to 38. I was wondering what the referance range for a normal level of this vitamin in the blood.
I had no idea when I saw your question that it would be so tough to find the answer.
It turns out that it varies by the laboratory, by the time of year (no kidding), and your age. What they analyze for is vitamin D3, which they refer to as 25(OH)D3.
I found a complex article in a nutrition journal that essentially said that this was not a standardized test from laboratory to laboratory. If you want to tackle it, I included it as a link. One thing it does say is that “serum 25(OH)D3 concentrations of < 80 nmol/L are associated with reduced calcium absorption, osteoporosis, and increased fracture risk."
Because you get vitamin D from the sun, I found a place that listed reference ranges for different seasons:
Summer
10 - 60 ug/l
Winter
5 - 25 ug/l
I found one that said 22.5-93.8 nmol/L was the range, and another that said 22-95.
nmol/L and ug/l are not equivalent. But they are probably close.
So I tried, but there is no answer. What you need to do is ask your doctor what the reference range is for the laboratory that did yours.
